Delta updates for windows 10

Delta updates for windows 10

I have seen that microsoft releases delta updates for windows 10. These updates are far smaller than the cumulative updates. Is it possible to retrieve them through wsusoffline, instead of the big cumulative updates ?

As soon as they are listed in the WU catalog (wsusscn2.cab), it would be possible to download them. Somehow I doubt that MS will do that, but we'll see. But even then, it doesn't really make sense:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-server-update-services/deploy/monthly-delta-update-isv-support-without-wsus wrote:Delta update will only be available for servicing of Windows 10 1607 (Anniversary Update) and 1703 (Creators Update) releases. For releases after 1703, you will need to implement a deployment infrastructure that supports Express update delivery to continue taking advantage of incremental updates.
Furthermore: WSUS Offline's purpose is to install updates on Windows systems regardless of their patch level. That's a quite different approach than delta updates, which can only be applied to systems with a specific patch level. So you'd need to keep ALL delta updates, which is the opposite of your intention of keeping the file/download size minimal.

Yes, but my 4g data plan is renewed each month and I do not mind keeping the small delta updates on my HDD.
So each month I would download and keep only xxxMB of updates, instead of a few GB of cumulative updates.
For instance, for the 1703 version of w10, yesterday I had to download kb4034660 which is 1 GB, then KB4034658 which is 1GB again and finally kb4034674 which is almost 900MB.

I already see the delta updates on the catalog here, for KB4034658,
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com ... =KB4034658
2017-08 Delta Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4034658) Windows 10 Security Updates 8/7/2017 n/a 386.1 MB

but there is no delta update for KB4034660,
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com ... =KB4034660

what should I do to make wsusoffline determine my version of windows, then retrieve the appropriate delta update if any ?

You can't. As I said: They delta updates are not in the update catalog wsusscn2.cab. Even if they were, WSUS Offline would have to be changed accordingly to use them. If you worry about the update volume/size, and don't patch more than one or two systems, consider using regular Windows Update instead; this uses either delta or express updates to minimize transfer volume.
