Recovering from a bad wsusscn2.cab download

Postby friday123 » 11.09.2013, 05:39

UpdateGenerator downloaded a corrupt wsusscn2.cab. When I ran the generator again I saw this:

Code: Select all
Starting WSUS Offline Update download (v. 8.5) for w60 glb...
Cleaning up existing directories...
Updating static download definitions...
No URLs found in ../static/StaticDownloadFiles-modified.txt.
Verifying integrity of Windows Update Agent installation and catalog files...
..\wsus\wsusscn2.cab: No match
..\wsus\wsusscn2.cab: Known file not used
hashdeep64.exe: Audit failed
   Input files examined: 0
  Known files expecting: 0
          Files matched: 2
Files partially matched: 0
            Files moved: 0
        New files found: 1
  Known files not found: 1

ERROR: File integrity verification failure.

And in the log:
Code: Select all
Tue 09/10/2013 23:49:24.12 - Info: Starting WSUS Offline Update download (v. 8.5) for w60 glb
Tue 09/10/2013 23:49:24.12 - Info: Option /includedotnet detected
Tue 09/10/2013 23:49:24.12 - Info: Option /verify detected
Tue 09/10/2013 23:49:24.12 - Info: Option /exitonerror detected
Tue 09/10/2013 23:49:24.22 - Info: Set time zone to LOC4:00
Tue 09/10/2013 23:49:24.55 - Info: Updated static download definitions
Tue 09/10/2013 23:49:24.70 - Error: File integrity verification failure

I tried deleting the client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab but that didn't work, I still got a file not found error. So I downloaded wsusscn2.cab manually and reset the hashes:
Code: Select all
cd client\wsus
del wsusscn2.cab
wget http://download.windowsupdate.com/microsoftupdate/v6/wsusscan/wsusscn2.cab
sigcheck -i wsusscn2.cab
cd ..\md
..\bin\hashdeep64.exe -c md5,sha1,sha256 -l -r ..\wsus > hashes-wsus.txt

Now the UpdateGenerator is running. I don't know whether or not you consider this a bug but I think it would be helpful if the program could auto-recover in the case of a bad wsusscn2.cab download. I don't know if anyone encounters the problem that they will figure out what to do. Thanks

The latest trunk version should already fix this (hashes are deleted after being verified good).
Microsoft update catalog: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/
Windows Install media download: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media

It doesn't. I just updated to 8.6 moments ago and my download is hanging on this cab - like forever. This cab hung up 8.5 as well.

Then please delete .\client\wsus\wsusscn2.cab and all text-files inside the directory .\client\md. Then restart the download.

...and define wsusscn2.cab as an exclusion to your on-access AV scanner, at least "on write".
It's a "zip bomb" and I guess your AV scanner makes it hanging; it's neither wget nor WOU.

Just an update - I stepped away from the computer to grab some breakfast - while WOU 8.6 continued thinking on this file...not sure when it finally let go - but it did and completed the iso creation.

Cheers,

Sonic.

As I said: It's not WOU thinking, it's your AV scanner, I suppose.

Well - what I saw for about 7 minutes while I was watching WOU "think" was that the file download was sitting at 99% and never actually "getting" to 100%...

I have since told ESET to ignore the entire WOU directory...see if that helps for next round.

Cheers!
