GDATA or Microsoft Antivirus in use ?
Both are known to extensively check all operations by the WOU Updater thus causing massive delays. Temporary disabling MSSE helps, for some reason it doesn't work with GDATA as some hidden checks seem to be always active.

That's right.
I disabled all services, autoruns and drivers of GData, and it was as slow as before.
My Computer needs over four hours to determine superseded updates.

Hi
I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and disabling that seems to do the trick.
I only disabled it during the checks, turning it back on afterwards.

Same to me. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and I do that: Settings

-> Excluded files and locations
1. C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\SupersededFileIdsSorted.txt -> Add
2. C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\SupersededFileIdsUnique.txt -> Add

-> Excluded file types -> txt -> Add

Than it works.
