updateGenerator.exe problem (1st time user)

Postby Duk_Phu » 10.05.2011, 03:43

A while back I was given a 2.8 MHz pentium 4 computer with a cleaned hard drive and a windows XP Home with Service Pack 1a operating system disk.

I only have dial-up service at home and thought it would be great to be able to apply the latest Windows XP patches off line using your wsusoffline program. In preparation I went to the local community college where I can use their high speed Internet computers in their library. Here are the steps I took:

1. I downloaded wsusoffline684.zip and unzipped it to the desktop.

2. I ran the resulting UpdateGenerator.exe at 3:51:14 PM. I selected Windows XP in english and checked the "Clean up download directories", "Include Service Packs", and "Verify downloaded updates", and "Create ISO image per selected product and language". Then I clicked on the Start button. I wanted to have an .iso created that I could download and burn while at the college to take home to run on the computer with freshly-installed Windows XP with SP 1a.

3. The library computer connected to the Internet, a black "DOS" screen appeared which said the program had downloaded 3 files and ended with "Determining superceded updates (please be patient, this will take a while)..."

No kidding! I waited until 4:45 PM when the library was about to close, and I had to shut the computer down. No additional information had ever come up in the UpdateGenerator window. No sign of progress whatsoever nor any estimate of time remaining.

Is this a normal situation--no change in the "DOS" screen for over 50 minutes? Did I do something wrong? How long should this process normally take before an .iso would be ready for me to download?

Just for the heck of it I decided to go through the above steps at home on my 120 MHz AMD computer with IE 5.5 and POTS. I hoped to see if an .iso actually would be created on the web site. This experiment didn't work. Instead UpdateGenerator.exe refused to run, giving the message:
------------
Error Starting Program
! The C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\WSUSOFFLINE\UPDATEGENERATOR.EXE file expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows version.
------------

Determining the superseded updates needs a lot of computing power and free memory as it's a large database operation.
On slower machines it needs a long time to finish.

We have seen a huge time increase if the processes are not running on the local computer but via Network or on a NAS.

Could you post some system details on the computer available at the library?
-> If they have multiple computers, try to find the fastest one with the most available memory.

I only go to the community college library on Sundays, as that day it is nearly empty of students. I use their fastest bank of computers which are little tiny small-form factor Dell things, but they have fast dual-processor CPUs in the range of 1.5 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. They are on a network, however and their is nothing I can do about that. Download speeds are usually in the 700-800 range, but I can't remember the units.

I thought all that processing would be done on your server and that then the .iso would be all that I would need to download. I did not enter a target for the .iso to come in to when I filled in your form requesting the operating system and language I needed. The community college computer is not the one I need to upgrade the operating system on. It's the one at home that I have. That's why I need an .iso.

I'll give it another try Sunday and get the exact computer specs at that time, too.

No. Not at all. WSUSOU downloads updates directly from the Microsoft servers. All processing is done on the local computer you're running WSUSOU on. It'a a tool, not a service.
The repository of updates is stored on the local PC, too, before the ISO is created, and remains there even after ISO creation finished. So you should ask before you store gigabytes of data on the library PC. Alternatively, run it from an USB drive you own.

That's not very fast.

I'm back in the Community College library today and see that you responded to my last email of 05/12/11 (yesterday).

The library computers are Dells with Intel Atom CPUs rated 330@1.6 GHz. The computers have 1.99 GB of RAM. The 232 GB hard drive (C:) has 216 GB free. Anything I put on there disappears once the computer is shut off or rebooted. The largest files I have downloaded in the past have been around 2 GB.

The network hard drive is 1.58 TB of which 1.30 TB is free. As a rule I don't put anything on that drive as I have plenty of flash drives up to 15 GB with me. I either haul files home on a flash drive or burn them to a CD-R or DVD.

How many GB do you estimate I need to store prior to the .iso generation? Can you estimate how long it might take to create the .iso on the college computer? At what point do I have control of where the .iso will end up?

I was told by one of the college administrators that I could just download an update package directly from Microsoft, but I've never been able to navigate their web site and thought your utility might be a better way to go.

I also found that I can also buy the Windows XP operating system with SP 3 for $35 from a local computer builder. I just have to continue to use my own product key with that. I don't wish to spend $35 every time I wish to check on updates, though.

I'll check this forum for further advice before I return to the college this coming Sunday.

Thanks for your help.

English version of XP Servicepack 3 (option to change language present on this site)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... 1555d4f3d4

The Atom 330 is not really fast, I have no experience how long the processes take on this CPU. The library computer may have a special setup and all file actions are virtually done on a network drive, leading to delays.
Have you ever tried to place the Wsus Offline updater on one of your USB sticks and run it from there?
This would avoid possible problems and you won't loose previously downloaded files on reboot. If you only download updates for WinXP (without dotnet, Microsoft Antivirus (MSSE), Defender definition files) you'll need about 1 GiB space on the drive. Take the file home and create the ISO there or install updates directly from the Stick by starting updateinstaller.exe from the client subdirectory.

BTW the ISO(s) created by WOU will end up in the iso subfolder of WOU.

That's not very fortunate for WSOSOU. The idea behind this tool is to keep the repository of updates after downloading and ISO creation, so you'd have to download only the delta (new or changed updates) in the future.

The ISO will be created in the ./iso subdirectory of WSUSOU.

I also found that I can also buy the Windows XP operating system with SP 3 for $35 from a local computer builder. I just have to continue to use my own product key with that. I don't wish to spend $35 every time I wish to check on updates, though.
Note that official Microsoft media obtained from a dealer does only include SP3, NOT any update released since that. As a result, you would need to buy such a CD only one time. Note that the ISO can also be downloaded or created by yourself.
