How to update from a WSUS Server

How to update from a WSUS Server

Postby aldav » 20.12.2010, 16:34

Hello, this is my first post. I'm having problems with wsusoffline 6.7. I think I understood that the software downloads updates from a wsus server preferible if it is given. We have a WSUS server in my company. The server is not behind a proxy. My problem is this, even if I specify WSUS server url in the button "WSUS...", the program still tries to go to microsoft for updates. Is this the correct behavior? How can I use this program to download updates from a WSUS Server rather than microsoft directly?

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome, aldav,

the local WSUS is preferentially used for downloading the dynamically determined patches, but statics (e.g. the catalog file wsusscn2.cab, SPs) are downloaded directly from Microsoft, and also if a WSUS download fails for any reason, it'll be retried from Microsoft (see also viewtopic.php?f=3&t=662 (German)).
Pls. see your log file (...\log\download.log) whether your WSUS has been successfully used.

Let's see if I understand. I have two Windows 7 computers. One at work, one at home. None of them have internet connection. The one at work does have access to a WSUS Server and it is configured to be updated. In fact it succesfully updates every time WSUS Server issues an update. There is no way I can use wsusoffline to update the PC at my home from WSUS Server at work? Can you point me in a direction to achieve this, update the home PC using only my work WSUS server?

This is the log for the updates download attempt:

Hello,

it seems, that WSUSOU tries to download the needed files from the WSUS and then from MS using the proxy.
Please check, if you've entered the needed informations for the WSUS and for the proxy correctly.
WSUS: http://servername
proxy: http://username:password@server:port

I thought that once it detected a WSUS Server it will start dowload updates from the WSUS and not from Microsoft. I just want to download updates from my company WSUS, without going to Microsoft, because I don't have Internet access, just access to WSUS server. Can I achieve this with wsusoffline?

No.
The update catalog file wsusscn2.cab is essential for both downloading and updating, ad it's not present on your WSUS.

Dear WSUSUpdateAdmin,

is it possible to use own local WSUS Server to "pre-filter" unwanted updates.
And then download the updates from WSUS Server using WSUSOU to generate offline update media (USB stick/DVD).
How exactely work the option: "Please enter your WSUS URL (http:\\server)" ?
I understand that WSUSSCN2.CAB has to be downloaded directly from MS. But shouldn't be all actual patches downloaded from internal WSUS Server afterwards?
Is it possible to specify custom port for internal WSUS Server? ( https://wsus.company.com:8530 )
Thank you a lot for the clarification!

Hi.

Please see viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3973, for example.

You may specify a custom HTTP port, but you must not use the HTTPS protocol, since the wget which comes with WOU doesn't support HTTPS.
