Windows 7/8.1 Zen+Kaby Lake detection - controversy updates

Postby JanCerny » 20.04.2017, 22:01

Hello, Microsoft was released few updates with (Ry)Zen and Kaby Lake CPUs detection with new annoying ballot screen. These updates are fixing lot of relevant bugs, but also crippling Windows Update for users with modern CPUs.

Enabled detection of processor generation and hardware support when PC tries to scan or download updates through Windows Update.

Unsupported hardware
Your PC uses a processor that is designed for the latest version of Windows. Because the processor is not supported together with the Windows version that you are currently using, your system will miss important security updates.

Known issues in this update (KB4015553, KB4015550, KB4015549...)
Symptom: If the PC uses an AMD Carrizo DDR4 processor, installing this update will block downloading and installing future Windows updates.
Workaround / Resolution: Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

  • Windows 7: KB4015552, KB4015549, KB4015549, KB4015546, KB4012218
  • Windows 8.1: KB4015553, KB4015550, KB4015547, KB4012219, KB4012219

Can you add these updates to the blacklist or add checkbox to the WSUS Offline menu?

Or take a look at this project written by fre4kyC0de and me, which does not require the patches (not identical to zeffy's) to be updated every month (at least I hope so):

https://github.com/fre4kyC0de/WindowsUpdate_KabyLake_Ryzen_Patch/tree/master
Patches wuaueng.dll (persists reboot, but RunAsTI.exe is detected as virus by some AVs [AutoIt3], SFC should detect it)

https://github.com/fre4kyC0de/WindowsUpdate_KabyLake_Ryzen_Patch/tree/OnTheFly
Uses WinDbg/cdb.exe to patch wuauserv in RAM (does not persist reboot [currently not needed], no system file changes, everything can be undone just by rebooting/restarting wuauserv)

Tested to be working on Windows 8.1 x64, Windows 7 x86 & x86 (all of them with the full April rollup installed). Windows 8.1 x86 isn't working on our test machine yet, so tests are still left.
