A couple of questions before using WSO

A couple of questions before using WSO

Postby bitheat » 28.12.2016, 12:32

Hi,
I am new to this software and forum. 1st of all many thanks for your efforts to offer such a nice tool.
Before using it I have a couple of questions.
1. is it possible with WSO to install only the important updates, not additionally the "recommended updates" ?
2. do I get again Win10 advertizements after using WSO or does this require to manually exclude some Microsoft patches.
if manually, could you kindly show me an example file for Win7 that works ?
3. people reported that their updates worked again after using WSO. Does it work again regardless of the Windows Update configuration ?
I dont like the modus to update automatically and prefer to use to search for updates but to determine the time for download and installation on my own.
4. Use of WSO. I generated now everything on an USB stick. Shall I simply execute WSO from there with Admin rights in the currently running system ?
5. Can I let it run multiple times, i.e. a week or month later ?

Many thanks

1)
First see  viewtopic.php?f=7&t=172
wsusou will just install the updates marked as security-relevant by MS. This does not include the "recommended updates" except for the new update rollups. We're currently working on a feature, which is able to exclude them automatically.

2)
No. wsusou does not (and never did) include any GWX stuff. Also the updates have been removed from Windows Update. So no problem there.

3)
If you want wsusou to fix Windows Update do the following:
- set Windows Update to "never search for updates"
- reboot
- run wsusou until it installed it's prereq's
- WU will work now, but wsusou does too ( ;) )

4)
For installation start .\client\UpdateInsteller.exe with admin-rights on the target system.

5)
Sure you can. But remember to update the repo using UpdateGenerator, if you need new updates.

This is now when I run .\Update.cmd as Administrator.
Now some other things happen.
It is strange that every time I run either UpdateInstaller (2x now) and now Update.cmd,
that something different seems to happen.
Between each run I did a reboot.

Good news.

Windows update works now again ;-)

The only thing that I do not understand in regards to this tool, why it seems to be necessary to run it multiple times.

Tool just prompts you to reboot and start the update installer again after reboot. Not all updates may be installed at once and reboots may be required multiple times.
