SFC WOES AND WOUNDS!

SFC WOES AND WOUNDS!

Postby rmmccoy » 10.09.2016, 05:31

Egad, I've got trouble :(

I have been running SFC and getting more error than I know what to do with. But before I once again blow away my OS (Win7) I would like to see if anyone has any thoughts as to how I am getting into this mess!

First, the SFC does not complete and I end up with:
Verification 95% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I am going to list just a sampling of the errors I am getting, no reason to throw the whole thing at you. First I get a series of messages like:

2016-09-08 20:25:26, Info CSI 0000009d [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:76{38}]"api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-0.dll" of Microsoft-Windows-DownlevelApisets-Windows, Version = 7.1.7601.16492, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, file is missing
2016-09-08 20:25:26, Info CSI 0000009e [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:76{38}]"api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-0.dll" of Microsoft-Windows-DownlevelApisets-Windows, Version = 7.1.7601.16492, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, file is missing
2016-09-08 20:25:26, Info CSI 0000009f [SR] This component was referenced by [l:320{160}]"Win8IP-Microsoft-Windows-DownlevelApisets-Windows-WinIP-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.1.7601.16492.Win8IP-Microsoft-Windows-DownlevelApisets-Windows-Package"

Some file somewhere appears to be missing but as to what and where, I need someone more knowledgeable than I.

The end of the error list and presumably when the Windows Resource Protection kills itself, I get:
2016-09-08 20:29:45, Info CSI 00000339 [SR] Beginning Verify and Repair transaction
2016-09-08 20:29:47, Info CSI 0000033b [SR] Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:40{20}]"\??\C:\Windows\en-US"\[l:32{16}]"winhlp32.exe.mui" from store

The one and only thing that I can say about that last error is that it didn't start appearing until I attempted to install the old version of help on my machine. Never had a successful install and had the error ever since. There are other errors similar to the above about not finding one file or another but I can't make out what it wants and where.

Anybody got any ideas?

Hello Richard,

These forums are dedicated to WSUS Offline Update. Although SFC (with parameter /scannow) is sometimes mentioned here to see if a Windows installation is OK, I doubt that you will get an appropriate answer to your SFC-specific problem.

Please, take a look at the Microsoft forums (for example).

Greetings

Oh shucks. I haven't done so well in the MS forums and I was hoping that some place new (like here) would give me "better" information. I appreciate the reply and info. Thank you very much.

Take care

You may try this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821
After applying the update run:
Code: Select all
dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
in an admin-command prompt.
But it looks like a broken SxS-Store, which isn't fixable that easy. Maybe MS could do something more for you.

@aker: Windows 7 does not support that DISM command.

When the SFC says something about the file isn't in the store, is it referring to the winsxs folder? I only have a slight understanding of where Window's stores (hides) things.

I think I got into this mess via update but have not been able to track down when and where. If I have to go back to a partial install of the OS and rebuild from there; how do I insure that I don't go down this messy trail again?

Thanks

Hey, maybe someone here can explain something to me. I was over on the MS forums and made a post about some of my problems and one fellow responded like within a day. I was excited and hopeful that I would get some answers. In short he told me to look in winsxs for a temp folder and that folder ought to have two sub-folders. Things were looking because there was pending deletes and pending renames. There were none in the first one and over 3,500 in the second.

I figured that this must be an important clue to someone more knowledgeable than I so I left a reply asking what should I do next? And time went by and there was no comments following my reply. I clearly admit that winsxs is a mystery and I am too far over the hill to think that I am going to understand everything there is about Windows; but what was the point of giving me detailed information on how to find these folders if he was just going to leave me hanging there?

Some further comment, even if it were just to say that the OS is broken and has to be re-installed, that would have been kinder than nothing. So if any of you people can enlighten me just a little bit, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.

Ultimately, you might have to do a Repair Install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/34 ... stall.html

It will keep your stuff and should restore the Component Store / Side-by-Side (SxS) Store to working condition.
