Integrating Windows 8/Server 2012 Cumulative Updates

Hi everybody!

As a user of Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, you've possibly stumbled over those large "Cumulative Updates" being offered by Windows Update. They are not security-related and therefore not part of the WSUS Offline Update. However, you can of course integrate them as static updates. The downside: Microsoft seems to refer to the number of single update files when using the term "cumulative". Each month the stack increases by several files. So, there isn't a single package containing all those updates. Don't ask me for the deeper sense of this concept. I haven't found any in-depth information yet.

Here are the download links and update IDs to be used in the custom static definition files (paths and file names: see below).

Strange - the corresponding download page explicitly lists this update for Server 2012.

What happens when WOU installs this update? Is it just skipped or does WOU end prematurely with an error?

Sorry für die späte Antwort. Aber wirklich weiterhelfen kann ich Dir bzgl. Server 2012 auch nicht. Wie Du selber schon erwähntest: Microsoft halt.

Ich schreib mal in Englisch weiter, damit alle Leser mitkommen.

Concerning the problematic update KB2780523 under Server 2012, I was mainly concerned about an ongoing updating process despite the occurring error. This seems to be the case. So someone can either ignore this error or remove the patch from the static update list, if only Server 2012 installations are updated.

Because of this and other possible shortcomings, I've posted this as a solution for "volunteers" who update many PCs and want to save some download bandwidth when connecting to Windows Update afterwards. However, beside these Cumulative Updates there are still many more Megabytes that Windows Update offers for Windows 8 installations. So this solution can only be a pain relief.

This month's patches by Microsoft don't seem to include a Cumulative Update for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. But I've found this:
Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: May 2013 (KB 2836988)

I don't know if this shall be a kind of successor for the Cumulative Update. Whatsoever, I include it in the list.

Ah, now I see! Microsoft has renamed "Cumulative Update" to "Update Rollup", even for previous releases.

Hi!

In July, the update rollup for Windows 8 x64 and for Windows Server 2012 differs. Windows 8 x64 only has the single update KB2855336, while Server has the two additional updates KB2862073 and KB2866029.

All three updates are defined in the StaticUpdateIds-w62-x64.txt file. Therefore, under Windows 8 x64 two of those three updates are tried to be installed but may throw error message because they are not relevant. I haven't tried it yet, so it's just a guess.
